The Marine LifeWatch Virtual Research Environment (VRE) is a product of LifeWatch that was created based on discussions and developments during a number of LifeWatch meetings held in 2014. The current portal aims to bring together some highly relevant marine resources, data systems, web services, online tools, etc. into one environment in the context of LifeWatch. The LifeWatch Marine VRE portal is organized in three interlinked sections: The Access section describes a range of data bases and data systems offering data on species names, traits, distributions, genes, etc. All resources were developed or are being maintained in the framework of LifeWatch. The Analyze section gives an overview of online tools for data analysis. For each tool it is described which LifeWatch resources and/or web services are used. Within the Develop section it is explained how to build your own marine virtual lab making use of a range of available web services that access and process data. Here information is given about what web services are, where to find the web services, how to access the web services, and how to connect web services into workflows.
